The Brazilian Symposium on Databases is the official database event of the Brazilian Computer Society and is the largest venue in Latin America for presentation and discussion of research results in the database domain. In 2012, SBBD reaches 27 editions of complete success and will be held on October 15th-18th, in São Paulo, Brazil. It was co-located with the Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia Systems.

For the 2012 edition, paper submissions were organized into two independent tracks: full and short papers. It must be observed that the SBBD full papers review process is integrated with the Journal of Information and Data Management (JIDM) review procedure, in the sense that the full papers presented at SBBD 2012 included those accepted to JIDM after SBBD 2011 and those directly accepted to SBBD 2012. As for the statistics, a total of 47 full papers were submitted, out of which 17 were accepted for presentation at SBBD 2012 and publication in JIDM, together with 2 other papers directly accepted to JIDM after SBBD 2011. A total of 76 short papers were submitted, written in Portuguese or English, out of which 33 were accepted. Therefore, a total of 123 papers were submitted, from 16 countries, out of which 50 were accepted, which represents an overall acceptance rate of 40%. Each contribution was reviewed by at least three program committee members.

Along with technical sessions, the symposium also promoted a Demos Session and a Thesis and Dissertations Workshop, as co-located events. SBBD 2012 accepted 6 demo papers, of the 13 submitted. The Thesis and Dissertations Workshop included 4 presentations from doctoral students and 11 from master students.

The symposium benefited from three tutorials, presented by Amr El Abbadi (UC Santa Barbara), Markus Schneider (U. Florida) and jointly by Ana Paula Appel (IBM Brazil) and Estevam Hruschka Jr (UFSCar). It also offered two short courses, with a special focus on Computer Science undergraduate students.

It was our great pleasure to include three invited talks in the SBBD 2012 program: "Explorando Dados Estruturados em Conteúdo Textual da Web : Métodos,Técnicas e Aplicações", by Altigran Soares da Silva (UFAM), "Complex Object Management in Databases: About the Preparedness of Database Technology for New Emerging Applications", by Markus Schneider (U. Florida), and “Delivering the Promise of Scalable and Elastic Data Management in the Cloud", by Amr El Abbadi (UC Santa Barbara).

SBBD 2012 was the result of the collective effort a large community, which we gratefully acknowledge. The various sections of these proceedings list in detail those that made SBBD 2012 a reality. However, as always, the heaviest responsibility felt on the local organization committee. The technical quality of SBBD 2012 reflects the judgment of the program committee members and external reviewers, who donated their precious time to evaluate the submissions. Finally, we thank the authors who submitted their contributions for consideration. The success of the symposium directly depends on their work and support.
